Still going with the early CHNC. Really does not matter much. The bed and spindle made by Hardinge are fairly bullet proof. You have collet closer, slide, and control built by someone else. The manufactures of those will be your source of advice and parts. My Omnitun converted Hardinge and Tsugami chuckers hardly ever need service or parts.

Hardinge HLV-H any good, should I buy?
If it doesn't have a worn carriage rack gear, it isn't a hardinge ;-) The headstock bearing are good for 50 plus years . The brake probably won't work ! Chucks, gears sets and banjos, taper attachments, collet closer levers etc. are all difficult to find and expensive, so make sure you get them if they're available.

There are lots of them still around, and they are often sold for very low prices. They will do the same work as the newer DSM-59 lathes, and use the same tooling except for the lever cross slide and turret, which have to fit the lathe bed. Hardinge made versions of the late model cross slides and turrets with bases that fit the split beds.

Bridgeport made a motorized model H vertical head on a bar that fits the overarm hole. The head uses the rare 2VB Hardinge collets. Later, Hardinge designed their own vertical head that was belt driven from the horizontal spindle and took 4C collets. The Bridgeport and Hardinge heads do not have quills, so they are not suited for drilling.

Spindle bearinsg run about %500 from hardinge and are extreamly easy to change. Non hardinge bears SUCK and dont last near as long. Ive owned these omniturns since the very came out love them there dead accurate and extremely fast, Ive installed about 15-20 in the valley for other machine shops back in the 90's.

The rear cutoff holder for the lever double tool cross slide is Hardinge model D10. It came in a Hardinge box, but the actual tool was made by Empire Tool, as were the blades.
